UPDATE 1:15 p.m. (10/13/21): Thanks to the teamwork displayed by Wythe County first responders, Wytheville fire officials say the vast majority of a historic town staple — Log House 1776 Restaurant — was not damaged by Tuesday evening’s structure fire.
According to the Wytheville Fire and Rescue Department, units were dispatched to the structure fire around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, and then requested assistance from the Max Meadows and Rural Retreat volunteer fire departments.
When crews arrived at the scene, the department says they found fire on the first floor and attic space with flames coming from the roof. Personnel began to search the first floor of the restaurant since it was the area of origin. However, due to structural integrity issues on the roof and an impending partial collapse, all interior units were pulled out of the structure and had to switch to fighting the fire from the outside.
Fire officials say an aerial unit was brought in and the bulk of the attic fire was extinguished. Afterward, with the fire under control, multiple crews went back inside to handle hots spots and areas that were not accessible via the aerial unit.
Thanks to the work of Wythe County first responders, the department says that approximately 85 percent of the Log House Restaurant building and its contents were saved, with the bulk of the damage limited to the attic.
However, according to fire officials, the owners, insurance companies, etc. are the ones who determine whether to remodel or tear down structures after such incidents.
The Log House 1776 posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Oct. 13 that the restaurant is closed for the time being, but it is unknown whether the restaurant will be rebuilt in the future.
