MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Multiple fire crews spent several hours on Tuesday afternoon, attempting to contain a brush fire along the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks in Montgomery County.

Officials with Montgomery County Emergency Services say that smoke was seen from a distance around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

Firefighters from the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department, the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department, and the Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) responded to the call.

When units arrived, they found a large and active brush fire encompassing approximately three acres of steep terrain.

Crews worked multiple sides of the fire in an effort to get it contained.

Firefighters continued widening the fire line until around 6:30 p.m. to ensure that the fire would not spread any further.

DOF crews are expected to remain on-scene through the night to try and extinguish the fire.

Montgomery County Emergency Services says there were no injuries in the fire.
