Christiansburg residents react after three local businesses shut down for allegedly offering sexual services

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Christiansburg residents are shocked after three local massage parlors were shut down for allegedly offering sexual services.

“I never knew it was going on,” Nathan Lucas said.

The three businesses — the Sunshine Spa at 3225 North Franklin Street, the Spring Spa at 2115 Roanoke Street, and the Oasis Day Spa at 2150 Roanoke Street — have had their business licenses suspended and are no longer allowed to operate.

The closures are the result of a lengthy investigation by the Christiansburg Police Department after officials received complaints from residents about illicit sexual behavior supposedly taking place inside each location.

Five people have now been charged after the department’s three-month investigation.

Officers conducted search warrants on Wednesday. WFXR News visited the Montgomery County Courthouse on Friday, May 14, but was not able to locate them. A spokesperson with the police department later revealed the warrants were sealed, and would remain so, unless a judge proved otherwise.

Right next to the Spring Spa sits “Tobacco Hub.” Marlene Jackson has worked there for three years.

“I’ve met quite a few people coming and going that have been there. They’ve been nice. They’ve bought a lot of stuff from us,” Jackson said.

She says she’s never seen any strange activity in the time that she’s worked next door.

“I have seen women go in there, mostly men, but since [COVID-19] hit, they went to appointments,” Jackson said. “So if they had a lot of clientele, it was after the store closed at night.”

Jackson says the community has been rattled by the news.

“When something small like this comes down in a small town, what do you say?”

Meanwhile, residents like Lucas aren’t happy about it.

“This community has changed a lot since I was growing up. It’s not for the better,” Lucas said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Detectives are working to determine if there’s any connection to sex trafficking, or other businesses, in the area.
