CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Carroll County authorities took a wanted man into custody after he tried to run away from a deputy on Tuesday and was eventually discovered hiding under trash bags.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was traveling east on Route 58 near the VFW in Hillsville on Tuesday, Nov. 9 when he noticed man walking west. The deputy reportedly recognized the man from previous interactions and knew he had an active warrant out of Grayson County.

After the deputy made contact with the man, the deputy asked about the active warrant, at which point the man ran away toward Westview Apartments, the sheriff’s office says.

Authorities say a K9 unit was brought to the scene to help track down the man. Eventually, the deputy decided to search a dumpster next to Eye Care on the Ridge and found the man hiding underneath bags of trash.

When the man refused “lawful commands to exit the dumpster,” he was removed from the dumpster and detained, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies then discovered a large knife on his person, as well as suspected narcotics and drug paraphernalia.

Officials say 31-year-old Ryner Braden Parish of Galax, was arrested and taken before a magistrate. He was not only served on the outstanding warrant, but he was also charged with obstruction of justice and brought to the New River Valley Regional Jail.

Meanwhile, drug charges are reportedly pending upon completion of the Department of Forensic Science’s analysis.
