UPDATE 12:09 p.m.: According to the Town of Blacksburg, the shelter-in-place status has been lifted at Blacksburg High School after an anonymous report came in about a student who had hidden a gun on campus.

Officials tell WFXR News that the school administrative team and the Blacksburg Police Department worked together to investigate the situation and keep students safe, putting the building under a shelter-in-place while canines searched the building.

However, the town says no weapon was found at the school.

The school day is set to continue, starting with the lunch schedule, but any parents who want to pick up their students should report to the front door — which is door 1 — to sign in. Administration will require proper identification per crisis safety protocols.

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Blacksburg High School is currently under a shelter-in-place following a report about a weapon inside the building, officials say.

According to Montgomery County Public Schools, the high school was put into shelter-in-place status shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1 at the recommendation of authorities.

School officials say police and canines are currently on site at Blacksburg High — which is almost 300,000 square feet — and working thoroughly and efficiently while the administration investigates the incident.

The district announced at 10:24 a.m. that all students and staff are safe and accounted for, adding that all doors are secure and nobody will be allowed to enter the building.

As of 10:51 a.m. on Thursday, Blacksburg High is still under shelter-in-place, according to officials.

A district spokesperson says that parents will receive a message as soon as there is an update or every 30 minutes until the situation is resolved.

“We are following our crisis plans and working with local law enforcement to ensure that every student is safe,” Montgomery County Public Schools said in a statement to WFXR News. “We are continuing to investigate. For now, our building will remain in a secure status until the police and canines have completed their evaluation.”
