BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — With all the snow in the forecast, many are asking, ‘When was the last time we got hit this hard?’
National Weather Service Meteorologist Robert Beasley says the last time was Feb. 12 and 13 of 2014.
“We saw, especially, in the Floyd, Franklin, Roanoke, Montgomery, Pulaski County area, we saw anywhere 24 to 26 inches. We have not had any storms since them that have netted much more than 10 to 12 inches,” said Beasley.
Before that, Beasley says Roanoke experienced its biggest snow event in history during January of 1996. Parts of Virginia received 40 to 50 inches, and the storm lasted three days.
before that, Beasley says the first one in March of 1993 was known as the ‘Blizzard of the Century’.
For this one, Beasley advises knocking out that grocery shopping early, but do not panic.
“The snow is going to be coming down fast and furious once we get into Sunday after daybreak. That is not the time to be out running errands and doing those things that should have been done Friday or Saturday,” said Beasley.
