The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) is sponsoring a unique, nationwide
crime, drug and violence prevention program on August 7, 2018 “National Night Out”.

“We’re going to have our officers here with their families and their kids so it’s a great opportunity to get together over hot dogs, snow cones, and ice cream and live music,” said Tom Foster, chief of police at Vinton Police Department.

It’s a chance for local police to meet with members of the community to reduce crime, drug-use and violence.

“It’s an opportunity for law enforcement agencies to get together in a very informal environment and meet with members of the community to talk about community problems,” said Foster.

Chief Foster says events like these give law enforcement the opportunity to interact with the community in an informal setting.

“We truly embrace the community policing concept here at the Vinton Police Department. Events are great because it’s an opportunity for us to get together because we aren’t out in a citizen contact as a result of a call for service,” said Foster.

Starting at 7 p.m., the department will host National Night Out at the Vinton War Memorial parking lot.
