A normal Friday at the Vinton Veterinary Hospital, but on Thursday afternoon one of the employees received a shocking email.

“One of the other front desk receptionist opened it and was shocked when she read it and it basically said someone is in your building and has an explosive device,” said Mekayla Childress, who works as one of the front desk receptionists.

Mekayla Childress works at the front desk.

She says they immediately went in to emergency mode calling police.

“Cause of course we didn’t know if it was real and if it was real, we’re thinking where would they have put a bomb in our building,” said Mekayla Childress, who works as one of the front desk receptionists.

The staff waiting across the street for 30 minutes while police searched and cleared the building.

“Luckily it was just a hoax so we didn’t have to go though evacuating all the animals and getting all of them out and making sure they were safe, but it was shocking to the receptionist who opened it,” said Mekayla Childress, who works as one of the front desk receptionists.

Mekayla says this is not the first time they have had to evacuate.

“We have actually had other incidences happen here were we have had to evacuate. We’ve had a couple of cars crash into our building, so with that we’ve had to evacuate as well, so we’ve gotten pretty good at it over the years, and we definitely always keep that in mind, if something does happen, we have our exit routes and we have that planned out between the whole staff here,” said Mekayla Childress, who works as one of the front desk receptionists.

She says she still can’t figure out why their office was part of the nation-wide hoax.

“Of course at the time we didn’t know that it was a nation-wide thing, we just thought why us? Why Vinton Vet,” said Mekayla Childress, who works as one of the front desk receptionists.
