MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Medical supplies are a hot commodity these days, and Martinsville wants to lend a hand in production.
Martinsville’s manufacturing sector has had its better days, but one city councilman wants to put those days in the rear view mirror. He wasted no time and went right to the top to get Martinsville some name recognition.
“I asked the President and the Governor ‘Please market Martinsville and Henry County,'” said city councilman Danny Turner.
Turner wrote a letter to President Donald Trump and other government leaders, listing the area’s assets and saying if manufacturing is needed, why not come to Martinsville?
“I’ve sent letters to our congressman on a regular basis,” Turner said. “I don’t think I’ve ever sent one to the President, though, before, so we’ll give this a try and see if it works.
“First of all, I’m not surprised by the letter,” said Martinsville City Manager Leon Towarniscki
Towarniscki says he didn’t know about the letter until after it was sent, but he still agrees with Turner. According to Towarniscki, Martinsville and Henry County have the sites, shell buildings, and attractions that would make any manufacturer happy to come to to southern Virginia.
“Great transportation networks, utility costs are low, taxes are low, so there’s a variety of factors, here locally, that all contribute to making this a great area to do business,” Towarniscki said.
Turner says the letter has gotten some traction and that even if it doesn’t lead to anything, at least he asked.
“If you don’t toot your own horn, your own horn won’t get tooted,” Turner said. “So that’s what we’re doing. We’re tooting our own horn, and I think anybody that comes here will fall in love with the place.”
According to Turner, the letter has gotten some traction with a Martinsville connection in the defense contracting sector. He says he hopes this can lead to something big for the city.
