The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office is warning about a man calling residents and identifying himself as a deputy.

Deputies told WFXR News they have gotten numerous reports about citizens getting a call from a man saying he is Deputy Mike Denton.

They said he leaves a voicemail and tells the resident to call 540-707-4070, Ext. 4. When the person calls that number they get an automated voice message stating the caller has reached the sheriff’s office. Once the caller enters the extension, the man identifying himself as Deputy Denton answers the phone.

He then reportedly asks the caller to go buy a gift card and give him the number of the card.

The sheriff’s office said they do not employ a Mike Denton and that this is a scam.
