Lynchburg police have confirmed the name of the officer who reportedly fired his handgun at a 22-year-old Lynchburg resident.
Officer M. Lazzi has been assigned to Patrol Operations following the incident. Lazzi has over 5-years of law enforcement experience.
Officer Lazzi has been placed on restricted duty.
On December 30, 2018, Lynchburg Police were called to a residence in the 700- block of Norwood Street for a report of a violent trespasser.
When officers arrived on the scene they found two people with guns, one of the suspects allegedly raised their gun at the officer.
According to police, when the officer shot his gun at the suspect, the suspect ran away from the scene on foot. No one was hit as a result of the officer firing his weapon. About 20 minutes later, officers located the suspect who again ran away.
Officers chased after him and eventually tased him, which helped them get the suspect into custody without injuring him.
One officer did have a hand injury.
The Lynchburg Police Department requested the Virginia State Police to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on restricted duty.
22-year- old Lynchburg resident Malik J’Kwar Andrews was arrested and charged with the following:
- Brandishing a Firearm (at LPD officer)
- Brandishing a Firearm (at another person on the scene)
- Grand Larceny
- Obstruction of Justice – Fleeing from a Law Enforcement Officer
According to officials, Andrews was transported to the Blue Regional Jail in Lynchburg where he is being held without bond.
