VSP: Sun glare played a role in a fatal car versus pedestrian crash in Nelson County

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash involving a car hitting a pedestrian in Nelson County Monday afternoon.

It happened on Monday, Nov. 15 at 3:35 p.m. on Front Street at the intersection of Brookside Lane in Lovingston. Police say a 2018 Ford F-150 was traveling west on Brookside Lane, it turned left onto Front Street, and was unable to avoid hitting a person standing in the southbound travel lane.

Officials say the pedestrian, 84-year-old Andre Derdeyn of Lovingston, died at the scene.

The driver — identified by authorities as 66-year-old Michael Doucette of Lynchburg — was wearing a seatbelt and was not hurt in the crash.

Police say no charges will be placed.

WFXR News was also told that sun glare was a contributing factor in the crash.
