VSP: Lynchburg man dead after Sunday morning crash in Cumberland County

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police say a Lynchburg man is dead after crashing into a tree in Cumberland County early Sunday morning.

According to police, the single-vehicle fatal crash occurred at approximately 4 a.m. on Sunday, May 30 along Carter Road, approximately two miles south of Sunnyside Road. 

Officials say a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville was traveling south on Carter Road when it ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree.

The driver — identified by Virginia State Police as 44-year-old Calvin J. Rice of Lynchburg — was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene of the crash. 

The investigation into Sunday morning’s fatal crash is reportedly ongoing.
