AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Several days after crashing into multiple utility poles and signs along Route 29 Business in Amherst County, authorities say an 87-year-old driver died at the hospital on Saturday.

According to Virginia State Police, state troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 29 Business — just north of Amer Circle — shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9.

Police say a 2002 Honda Civic was heading south on Route 29 when it ran off the right side of the road — hitting a utility pole, a sign, and a ditch — before traveling back across the road and off the left side, where it struck another utility pole and a sign.

The driver — identified by authorities as Cecil D. Harris, 87, of Amherst — was brought to Lynchburg General Hospital, where he died from his injuries on Saturday, June 12. He was reportedly wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

This fatal crash is still under investigation by Virginia State Police.
