AMHEST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — On Tuesday morning, Virginia State Police shared the identity of the driver who died after a recliner fell off a pickup truck and hit his car along Route 29 in Amherst County Monday afternoon.

At approximately 2:20 p.m. on Monday, May 17, state troopers say they were dispatched to a crash in Amherst County.

According to police, a Chevrolet S10 pickup truck was traveling on Route 29 South, but while it was crossing the Carter Glass Memorial Bridge, a recliner it was hauling fell from the bed of the truck and into the southbound travel lane.

Virginia State Police say a sedan and a tractor-trailer were traveling behind the pickup truck at the time. The sedan braked suddenly, but it could not avoid striking the recliner. The tractor-trailer was also unable to stop and hit the sedan.

Officials say the sedan’s sole occupant — 44-year-old Richard E. Dalton of Monroe — was wearing a seatbelt, but he died at the scene of the crash.

Meanwhile, the pickup truck was not damaged and the tractor-trailer driver was not injured in the crash.

The crash is still under investigation, but police say charges are pending.
