UPDATE: Police identify Amherst County driver who died after crashing into James River

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police announced the identity of the driver who died after crashing into the James River in Amherst County Sunday night.

The single-vehicle crash occurred shortly after 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 20 in the 500 block of River Road, according to VSP.

Police say the 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling on River Road when it ran off the left side of the road, hit a tree, and crashed into the James River.

According to officials, the vehicle was pulled from the water a little over two hours later.

The driver of the Chevrolet — identified by authorities as 30-year-old Thorn J. Whittaker of Madison Heights, — died at the scene of the crash, which is still under investigation.
