BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Police confirmed to WFXR News that two people were hospitalized Monday night following a two-vehicle collision in Bedford County.

According to Virginia State Police, troopers were dispatched to the 5700 block of Big Island Highway for a two-vehicle crash shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 23.

Police told WFXR News that the initial investigation suggests that the two vehicles — a pickup truck and a passenger vehicle — collided head-on.

The Bedford Fire Department says that crews arrived and found the two vehicles, both heavily damaged with at least one person trapped inside each vehicle. First responders then split up to remove the occupants from the vehicles through dash rolls, pedal cutting, and seat and door removal.

Officials say the two injured drivers were transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, including one who was airlifted.

The investigation into this crash is reportedly ongoing.
