UPDATE 2:52 p.m.: Both VDOT and Altavista fire officials say they have cleared the scene along Lynch Mill Road, where a tanker truck hauling thousands of gallons of propane overturned Thursday morning.
UPDATE 9:34 a.m.: A number of homes in Campbell County were evacuated Thursday morning after a tanker truck — which was hauling approximately 10,020 gallons of propane — overturned along Lynch Mill Road.
According to Virginia State Police, troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash in Altavista at 6:22 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23.
Police say a tanker truck traveling along Lynch Mill Road was making a right turn when it overturned in the road, coming to a rest on its side near Valentine Drive.
However, the driver — described by officials as a man from North Carolina — got out of the tanker on his own and was not injured in the crash.
While none of the propane has leaked, Virginia State Police say the tank needs to be emptied before it can be set upright and removed from the road.
As of 9:21 a.m. on Thursday, authorities say the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), VDOT, and local fire and EMS personnel are on the scene.
If you need to travel along Lynch Mill Road on Thursday, you are asked to a detour and possible delays because the road will be closed until the scene is clear.
More specifically, the Altavista Fire Company says Lynch Mill Road is closed between Dearing Ford Road and Goodman Crossing.
According to VDOT, traffic is being detoured off Lynch Mill Road at Route 626 and Route 712.
As an additional safety precaution, several residences in the immediate vicinity of the crash site along Lynch Mill Road have been evacuated, according to police.
The circumstances surrounding this crash are reportedly still under investigation.
CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Campbell County motorists may need to take an alternate route Thursday morning because of a tractor-trailer crash shutting down Lynch Mill Road.
The Altavista Fire Company posted on Facebook shortly before 7 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23 that Lynch Mill Road is currently closed at Valentine Drive.
Fire officials expect this road closure will be in place for an extended amount of time.
