UPDATE 3:57 p.m.: Virginia State Police have released the identity of the 72-year-old pedestrian who died in Bedford County after being hit by a tractor-trailer early Tuesday morning along U.S. Route 460 West.
Officials say Curtis Junior Martin of Appomattox was struck by the tractor-trailer shortly before 3:50 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7 and died at the scene of the crash. He was reportedly wearing dark clothing while walking in the roadway.
According to police, there are no charges pending in connection with this deadly crash.
UPDATE 9:10 a.m.: According to Virginia State Police, a 72-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a tractor-trailer while walking along U.S. Route 460 West in Bedford County early Tuesday morning.
Police tell WFXR News the 72-year-old male was walking in the roadway and was hit by a westbound tractor-trailer on Route 460 near Candle Lane. This happened shortly before 3:50 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7.
Authorities say Bedford County 911 received a call from a passerby shortly before the crash, stating that a man was walking in the roadway, but the pedestrian was struck before units could respond.
Officials plan to share more information about the incident after state troopers find and notify the man’s next-of-kin.
UPDATE 7:04 a.m.: Bedford County fire officials say a pedestrian was hit by a tractor-trailer along U.S. Route 460 West, leading to delays in the area Tuesday morning.
According to the Bedford Fire Department, crews were dispatched to Route 460 West near Candy Lane shortly after 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7 for a crash involving a pedestrian.
The department says units found one person who had been struck by the tractor-trailer and “was pronounced by personnel.”

As of this writing, VDOT says the westbound right lane and right shoulder just reopened on Route 460 near Magnolia Drive following the tractor-trailer crash.
BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Tuesday morning motorists may need to seek an alternate route due to a tractor-trailer crash blocking part of U.S. Route 460 West in Bedford County.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the westbound right lane and right shoulder of Route 460 are closed near Magnolia Drive/Route 681.
As of this writing, VDOT says Route 460 West’s traffic is backed up for about half a mile between Montvale and Bedford.
