Town of Altavista to resume utility disconnections starting Nov. 8

Lynchburg & Central Virginia News

ALTAVISTA, Va. (WFXR) – The Town of Altavista will soon begin resuming shutting off utilities to customers with a past-due balance who have not set up a payment plan or are not adhering to the term of their payment plan, starting on Nov. 8, 2021.

With Virginia lifting its State of Emergency on June 30, utility service disconnections across the Commonwealth are able to resume.

The moratorium began in April of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2021 General Assembly included language in the Appropriations Act that prohibited utility service disconnections for non-payment of utility bills until 60 days after the State of Emergency ends.

Therefore, all utility service disconnections were able to resume on Aug. 29, 2021.

Penalties for non-payment may also resume.
