AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Authorities and school officials took action on Monday after learning about an Amherst County student who was found in possession of a modified BB gun.

According to Amherst County Public Schools, the staff received a report about a student in possession of a weapon at Amherst Education Center on Monday, Aug. 29.

Officials say the district administration and the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office investigated the report and discovered that a student had a BB pistol that was made to resemble a handgun.

The district tells WFXR News that the administration and the sheriff’s office took appropriate actions, but there were no threats made to any Amherst County Public Schools students or staff.

Safety is a top priority in Amherst County Public Schools. We encourage you to take time to discuss school safety and the seriousness of such an incident. Please remind your students that if they “see something, say something” to an adult. School safety is a collaborative effort between the schools, families, and the community. This news comes shortly after the Lynchburg Police Department announced that a minor accused of trespassing at E.C. Glass High School and shouting that he had a firearm in his possession was arrested.
