UPDATE 11:06 a.m.: The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office says that missing 70-year-old William James Spencer has been located safely and that he is back with his family, leading to the cancellation of the overnight Senior Alert.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Bedford County authorities and state troopers have issued a Senior Alert for an elderly Bedford man with a cognitive impairment who went missing Thursday evening.

Virginia State Police say 70-year-old William James Spencer was last seen at approximately 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9 on Wheatland Road in Bedford County.

According to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, family members reported Thursday evening that Spencer left his home in Bedford and they have not been able to find him.

The sheriff’s office says Spencer appears to have taken his vehicle, a 2017 white Ford Escape with Florida plates NQBF44, and left the immediate area.

Authorities describe Spencer as being 5’6″ tall, 250 pounds, blue-eyed, and mostly bald with some white hair. He was last seen wearing a black shirt with mustard-yellow shorts. He may also be using a walker.

According to officials, this missing senior has severe dementia and cataracts, which makes his eyesight very poor. As a result, police say Spencer’s disappearance poses a credible threat to his health and safety.

If you see Spencer or his white Ford Escape, you are asked to call the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office at 540-586-7827.
