Scam callers spoofing Bedford County Sheriff’s Office phone number to ‘solicit donations’ from community

Lynchburg & Central Virginia News

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Authorities say scammers are calling members of the Bedford County community and pretending to work for the sheriff’s office in order to “solicit donations” for medical equipment.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office says local residents have reported receiving phone calls from (540) 586-7827 in which foreign scam artists claim to be employees of the sheriff’s office and ask people to donate money for medical alert equipment.

While that number is the non-emergency phone number for the sheriff’s office, authorities say these scammers have “spoofed” the number in order to look legitimate.

“The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office NEVER solicits donations or requires any sort of payment over a telephone,” the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook on Monday, April 19.

If you receive one of these calls, you are encouraged to hang up.
