LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – One person has been released from custody as Lynchburg authorities conduct an extensive investigation into Sunday evening’s fatal shooting along York Street.

The Lynchburg Police Department says officers were called to the 200 block of York Street for a report of a malicious wounding at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, May 30.

When police arrived, they found a man — identified as 24-year-old Justin Lee Lewis of Lynchburg — with a gunshot wound who died at the scene.

One person, who remains unidentified, was taken into custody in the 200 block of Chambers Street in connection with the incident.

After detectives interviewed multiple witnesses and the involved party, who first called police, the department provided this information the Lynchburg Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

However, officials say it was determined that criminal charges are not justified based on the evidence available at this time. The individual has reportedly been released from custody.

Anyone with information about this shooting — which is still under investigation — is asked to call Detective Dubie at (434) 455-6102 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 798-5900.
