LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Police are investigating after an officer was said to have struck a wanted man with his vehicle after the man fell off a horse during a pursuit in Lynchburg Saturday night.
Shortly after 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, the Lynchburg Police Department says officers responded to the intersection of Fifth and Commerce Streets for a report of a wanted individual who was riding a horse.
When police arrived, they found the individual and informed him that there was a warrant for violating a protective order, but he would not comply with officers’ orders and fled on the horse, riding head-on into traffic.
Officers continued to order the individual to stop riding the horse for his safety and the safety of drivers and passengers.
A little less than 15 minutes later, the department says the individual fell off the horse at 15th and Polk Streets while police were still trying to stop him.
As the officers approached him, authorities say one officer accidentally struck the person with his vehicle while he was laying on the road.
According to police, they immediately offered aid and requested medical assistance from the Lynchburg Fire Department.
That individual was reportedly taken to Lynchburg General Hospital with serious injuries. However, the department says the horse was not injured and was returned to the individual’s family.
The Lynchburg Police Department has brought in Virginia State Police to investigate this incident.
Because of the State Police investigation, Lynchburg Police will not release any additional information or body camera footage at this time.
Meanwhile, the Lynchburg Police Department is conducting an internal investigation, as well.
According to policy, the officer who was involved has been placed on restricted duty.
