NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A man is dead after a “chain reaction crash” involving several parked vehicles took place in Nelson County Saturday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police.

Police say they responded to the multi-vehicle crash on Route 656 — approximately half a mile west of Route 691 — just before 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.

According to authorities, a 1993 Chevrolet 2500 pick-up truck was heading east on Route 656, crossed the centerline, traveled through the westbound lanes, and hit a 2017 Kia Sportage parked on the side of the road.

The Chevrolet then struck a 2002 Chrysler van parked in front of the Kia, causing the van to collide with a 2006 Chrysler 300 that was parked in front of it.

Officials say nobody was inside any of the parked cars at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Chevrolet — identified by Virginia State Police as 67-year-old Calvin A. Burks Jr. of Gladstone — was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene.

However, police say a medical emergency may have factored into the fatal crash, which is still under investigation.
