Neighbors react to large fire at Lynchburg candle factory

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — A large fire that broke out Friday night at an old candle factory created lots of visible smoke throughout downtown Lynchburg.

The fire happened on 31 Cabell Street near the Rivermont area on Friday, Oct. 15. Now, all that’s left is lots of debris and an empty shell of a historic building.

A long-time resident, Micheal Preston, studies local history and stopped by to see the remains of the old building.

“It’s an old industrial building, probably from around the turn of the century when this was a heavily industrialized area,” said Preston. “Both sides of the creek had railroad lines and you could see how it would tie in right down here.”

The building, located near the Point of Honor on Cabell Street, is adjacent to another older building, an apartment complex.

Emilee Noel is one of the residents who was inside during the time of the fire.

“I woke up from a nap, just got off work, woke up, looked out the window, and there were flames barreling out of the window back here,” described Noel.

Shortly afterwards, she heard fire alarms and had to evacuate.

“My heart was racing,” Noel said. “I just wanted to get out. I let my dog out before I could even put her on the leash.”

Fire crews were on scene for more than six hours while folks nearby watched clouds of smoke hovering over their town.

The Battalion Chief with the Lynchburg Fire Department says one woman was inside at the time of the fire and sustained minor burns.

“I know there were two women who kind of kept it up,” Noel added. “There were stray cats around here and everything.”

Fire officials say everything inside the candle factory suffered some degree of damage. However, a fire marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire.

The Battalion Chief says they aren’t sure where the fire started yet, but it seems like it started in the front and spread to the back of the building.
