BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man for the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer on Tuesday.

At approximately 10:16 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, the sheriff’s office received a call for a domestic-related disturbance in the 2000 block of Woodshire Drive in the Blue Ridge area of Bedford County, officials say.

Upon arrival at the scene, the responding deputy made contact with 42-year-old James Edward Lewis of Blue Ridge, according to authorities. The deputy tried to take Lewis into custody for domestic assault when Lewis grabbed a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the deputy.

After a struggle, the deputy was reportedly able to get Lewis to the ground, disarm him, and take him into custody without further incident.

The sheriff’s office tells WFXR News that Lewis was transported to the magistrate, where he was charged with assault on a family member and attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer.

Lewis is currently being held at the Blue Ridge Regional Adult Detention Center without bond, according to officials.
