Man in custody after reportedly assaulting several people at Bedford County Food Lion, leading authorities on pursuit

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office says a man faces a number of charges after he reportedly assaulted multiple people at a Food Lion and led authorities on a vehicle chase around the county on Saturday.

According to the sheriff’s office, a call came in on Saturday, Nov. 13 about a man who had assaulted several people at the Food Lion in New London.

When deputies arrived, the man — later identified as 26-year-old Jeffrey Ray Johnson II — left the scene in his vehicle and the deputies followed him.

After a lengthy pursuit through the north end of Bedford County — which included deploying tire deflation devices — the sheriff’s office says Johnson’s vehicle broke down on Route 501 and he was taken into custody following a short struggle.

Authorities tell WFXR News that Johnson is being charged with the following:

  • Felony eluding police
  • Felony assault on law enforcement
  • Felony possession of drugs
  • Felony transportation of a firearm while under a protective order
  • Felony possession of a firearm with drugs
  • Driving under the influence
  • Driving on a suspended license

Additional charges are reportedly pending.

According to officials, Johnson is being held without bond at the Bedford Adult Detention Center.
