LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — A death investigation is underway after police discovered a man’s body inside a Lynchburg apartment while performing a welfare check Thursday morning.
Shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, the Lynchburg Police Department says officers responded to 605 Harrison Street to check on a man who had not been seen for several weeks.
Once inside the apartment, police say they found a man who was not only dead, but also in an advanced state of decomposition. Officials identified the man as 58-year-old Roy Mitchell Hicks III of Lynchburg.
According to the department, Virginia State Police responded to the scene to help with forensic collection equipment. Meanwhile, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke will conduct the autopsy.
Authorities tell WFXR News there is no perceived threat to the Lynchburg community.
