Lynchburg’s oldest eatery celebrates 86 years with an 86 day food drive

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — A legendary Lynchburg hot dog eatery, the Texas Inn, celebrated its 86th anniversary on Monday.

The restaurant honored this momentous occasion on Monday, Oct. 11 by offering 86 cent hotdogs at both Lynchburg locations.

However, the Texas Inn, also known at “the T Room,” has bigger plans in the works for their 86th anniversary — teaming up with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank for an 86 day food drive.

The owner of the Texas Inn, Dave Saunders, says this is their way of giving back to a community that’s offered so much support over the decades.

“We know that donations have not been at peak levels, so we figured if we help them and gave them a big push, we know that we have thousands of customers, why not have them help out and we know that they’ve been generous in the past, and we know they’ll step up again,” Saunders said.

The Texas Inn will be collecting non-perishables at the downtown Lynchburg location and at the Cornerstone Street location.

Examples of non-perishable items are listed below, but you are asked to avoid items in glass containers:

  • Canned soups
  • Canned vegetables
  • Cereal
  • Peanut butter
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Boxed macaroni and cheese
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Canned tuna and chicken
  • Paper products
  • Baby food, formula, and diapers
  • Soap
  • Feminine products
  • Toothbrushes

Saunders adds that, with the help of the community, the goal is to fill up their food donation box every day for all 86 days.
