Lynchburg woman publishes first book; lands 3-book deal

Lynchburg & Central Virginia News

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — A Lynchburg woman is now a published author. Debra Torres released her first book, Forbidden Gift, which is already getting raving reviews.

Forbidden Gift is about a young Amish writer who is forbidden to write by her overbearing bishop before learning a secret that could turn her entire community upside down.

Torres and her family lived for years in an Amish country in Pennsylvania and she’s always had an interest in the culture.

She told WFXR News that she is already getting great feedback on Forbidden Gift, including from a book critic.

“She said, ‘But I didn’t expect to love the book! This book was fantastic!'” Torres said. “She just went, ‘oh my goodness,’ and I was like, ‘wow.’ And she even told me later, she said, ‘I’m really glad I like the book, because sometimes if you don’t like the book, that can be really uncomfortable if you’re trying to review it for someone.’ But she really liked it. People who read it seem to really enjoy it and that makes me feel good as a first time author.”

Torres says Elk Lake Publishing liked the book so much, they signed her to a three-book series. She has already started working on book number two in the series.
