LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — A new community organization in Lynchburg will soon become mobile.
The ‘We Recover Group’ is a Lynchburg non-profit, helping recovering addicts. They’re now renovating a donated school bus to use for outreach.
“We’re all in recovery so this is a way for us to give back what was freely given to us,” said Executive Director Logan Donoghue.
The bright blue school bus will help recovering addicts by going directly to their neighborhoods.
“We want to connect people to the resources they may not know about, but we also want to help the people who are already in recovery to stay in recovery,” Donoghue said. “Some of the best things that have ever happened to me, happened because of my recovery. I’m present now, I get to be with my family, I’m plugged in with them. I have a community to lean on and I get to help other people.”
He started the ‘We Recover Group‘ in March of last year to help people like himself. Since then, the group has been helping people tackle addiction and get the resources they need to recover.
With the help of donations, the group plans to install more comfortable seating, a work station, air conditioning, and a food warming station. During the winter months, they plan to provide hot meals to people with housing insecurity.
“Thirty-eight percent of people who suffer from homelessness are addicted to some sort of substance, so hopefully we can address both of those issues and make a little bit of a difference,” said Donoghue.
The group also looks forward to hosting peer support groups and training on-the-go.
“A lot of times with addiction, you’re just not aware of the resources that you have in the community and you’re not always actively looking for it. So if we can step in when people may not be expecting it, that may be the catalyst they need to get into recovery,” Donoghue said.
The ‘We Recover Group’ is still looking to raise $10,000 to complete the bus. They’re also looking for donated goods and furniture.
