UPDATE 12:48 p.m.: According to Amherst County authorities, the northbound lanes of U.S. Route 29 Business and Lakeview Drive are back open near the Hardee’s in Madison Heights after Tuesday morning’s gas leak.

However, VDOT says the southbound right lane and right shoulder are still closed on U.S. Route 29 Business at this time.

MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. (WFXR) — Because of a gas leak Tuesday morning, Madison Heights motorists may run into some backups near the Hardees along U.S. Route 29 Business.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), both the northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. Route 29 Business are closed near Mays Street, Seminole Drive, and Route 681 due to “an incident.”

However, the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office says the U.S. Route 29 Business closure is the result of a gas leak.

Motorists are asked to use alternate routes for the time being.
