BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR) — The Bedford County Department of Fire and Rescue reports that a firefighter was found dead in a pond on Friday night.
Officials say the firefighter has been identified as Lt. Mel Nowlin, a long-time volunteer with the Big Island Volunteer Fire Company. Not only was he a volunteer firefighter but the company’s secretary and treasurer as well.
Bedford County Fire and Rescue says a call was received on Friday at 7:17 p.m. in reference to a missing man. They say the Bedford County Special Operations Unit responded with the Big Island Volunteer Fire Company, Big Island Emergency Crew, Forest Volunteer Fire Department, Bedford Fire Department, Moneta Volunteer Fire Department, and the Boonsboro Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company.
First responders report recovering Nowlin’s body from a pond on his property.
Authorities say at this time no more information is available on his death.
