NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Charges are pending in connection with a Sunday night crash in Nelson County that left one person dead and another hurt, police tell WFXR News.

Virginia State Police say they responded to a two-vehicle crash shortly after 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 along Lowesville Road, nearly a quarter-mile east of Whitehead Road.

According to authorities, a 2020 Toyota Tacoma was heading west on Lowesville Road, crossed the centerline, and hit an eastbound 2002 Volkswagen Passat. The impact of the collision caused the Volkswagen to run off the right side of the road and into a ditch while the Toyota overturned and came to rest in the ditch.

The driver of the Volkswagen — identified by officials as 52-year-old Thomas H. Fitzgerald III of Roseland –was not wearing a seatbelt and died one the way to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the person driving the Toyota — 27-year-old Hunter H. Campbell of Lowesville — was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident and was brought to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police tell WFXR News they are looking into driver fatigue as a contributing factor in the crash.

According to Virginia State Police, charges are pending in connection with the ongoing investigation into this deadly wreck.
