LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The Lynchburg Police Department (LPD) is reporting that one of their officers was involved in a shooting following a vehicle pursuit on Feb 2.
Reports say officers were dispatched at 9:23 p.m. to the 700 block of Grady Street in response to multiple shots fired. The officer attempted to stop a vehicle whose driver was believed to be involved in a disturbance in the 12th Street area.
LPD says the male driver attempted to elude officers and eventually fled from the vehicle on foot in the Pierce Street and 14th Street area. The officer caught the suspect Rhyheam Brown, 25, on the 1400 block of 17th street.
Reports say Brown had a firearm when caught, and the officer shot him with a handgun. The suspect was given care by LPD officers until the Lynchburg Fire Department arrived to transport him to the Lynchburg General Hospital where he later died from injuries.
LPD Chief Ryan Zuidema has contacted the Virginia State Police Department to investigate the incident. The officer involved with the shooting has been placed in-enforcement, limited-duty status until all investigations are complete.
