AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A man is facing a manslaughter charge after a Friday crash in Amherst County that not only left him injured, but resulted in the death of one person and the hospitalization of another.

According to Virginia State Police, the two-vehicle crash happened shortly after noon on Friday, Oct. 29, on Route 29 Business/South Amherst Highway at Route 663/North Coolwell Road.

Authorities say a 2004 Honda Odyssey was traveling west on North Coolwell Road, but it failed to stop for the posted stop sign, continued across Route 29 Business, and ended up pulling into the path of a 2019 Ford Econoline 350 going south on Route 29 Business.

Police tell WFXR News the Ford was unable to avoid the Honda and hit it on the passenger side. The impact of the crash then forced both vehicles off the road and into a ditch. However, the Honda also struck a stop sign post before coming to rest in the ditch.

The driver of the Odyssey — identified by officials as 65-year-old Larry Fitch of Washington, D.C. — was seriously injured and was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital.

According to police, the driver of the Ford — 65-year-old Glen N. Hawes of Lynchburg — was also brought to Lynchburg General Hospital with serious injuries.

However, a passenger in the Odyssey — 62-year-old Charlene V. Fitch of Madison Heights — died at the scene of the wreck, authorities say.

All three of these people were reportedly wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Virginia State Police say Fitch was arrested for DUI-related involuntary manslaughter.
