Crash in Prince Edward County kills woman who was not wearing a seatbelt on Christmas Day, police say

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police are investigating a crash in Prince Edward County from Christmas Day that took the life of a woman.

It happened on Saturday, Dec. 25 at 3:13 p.m. on Prince Edward Highway just west of Milford Lane. Police say a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer was traveling east on Prince Edward Highway when the driver ran off the road into a ditch and the car overturned.

Authorities tell WFXR News that 64-year-old Wayne A. Alegre of Pamplin was taken to the hospital for serious injuries. He was behind the wheel, wearing a seatbelt, and ejected from the car, according to police.

There was a passenger also in the vehicle, 43-year-old Bridget R. Alegre, who was also taken to a hospital for treatment, but later died from her injuries. Virginia Police say the woman was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
