LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – During the past 67 years, hospitals from across the country have come together to celebrate the dedicated professionals, history and technology that make Centra’s facilities beacons of confidence and care.
This year, Centra is celebrating National Hospital Week with activities spanning the week from Monday, May 10 through Sunday, May 16.
National Hospital Day was created in 1921 as a way to encourage trust in hospitals in the wake of the Spanish flu outbreak of 1918.
It was later turned into a week of celebration in 1953 — coinciding with Florence Nightingale’s birthday to honor her role in revolutionizing hospital care in the mid-1800’s.
The event has turned into the largest healthcare event in the nation.
National Hospital Week, this year, begins on May 10 and will run through May 16.
Centra’s theme for 2021 is “Healthcare Heroes” as it represents the 7,500 Centra Caregivers who provide care to our communities every day.
The week will be celebrated with daily activities. However, the heart of healthcare is giving back and Centra will also provide opportunities for Caregivers to do so by donating to designated local non-profits and/or sharing words of encouragement through cards with residents of long-term care and senior-living facilities.

Included in the activities, will be a special Parade Day on Wednesday, May 12.
The parades will take place at multiple locations including at Lynchburg General Hospital, Virginia Baptist Hospital, Bedford Memorial Hospital and Southside Community Hospital.
The flyer below shows the times for each parade.
“We are privileged to do the work we do. It comes as a high honor to be the people that care for people. We are grateful for the support of our communities, our neighbors, families and friends. This week celebrates all we do to partner with them to live their best lives.”Michael Elliott, Chief Transformation Officer and Community Liaison for Centra
