Campbell County Public Schools’ plans underway to return to VHSL competition

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Campbell County Public Schools announced Thursday that plans are underway to return to Virginia High School League (VHSL) competition amid the coronavirus pandemic. 

According to the school district’s statement released on Thursday, Dec. 3, Campbell County students and coaches are set to return for winter sports on Monday, Dec. 7, following the guidance provided by Gov. Ralph Northam’s Executive Order 67 and the VHSL.

Students are asked to check their school websites for tryout information, as well as health and safety requirements.

School officials says the latest executive order from Northam promotes the need to limit capacities in gyms during the pandemic. Therefore, spectators will not be allowed to attend games or activities, per Seminole and Dogwood District decisions, according to Campbell County Public Schools.

In light of this decision, the school district is working to broadcast games through livestreaming services provided by the National Federation of High Schools. School officials will release more information about this streaming service when it is fully operational.

“Campbell County Public Schools is committed to providing our students with opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities safely. Information regarding sport specific mitigation strategies can be found at vhsl.org,” the school district said in Thursday’s statement. “CCPS will continue to closely monitor the local health data and may postpone or suspend all or some activities during periods of substantial COVID-19 transmissions in the community or schools.”
