Bridgewater Marina and Boat Rentals announces National Safe Boating Week campaign

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. (WFXR) — Bridgewater Marina and Boat Rentals announced it will run a social media campaign aimed at promoting National Safe Boating Week, which is scheduled for May 22-28.

“This campaign runs annually just before Memorial Day weekend, which makes it an ideal time to remind boaters of safety and etiquette basics,” said Ryan Waters, a Bridgewater Marina partner. “We know people are eager to get out on Smith Mountain Lake to enjoy the summer season, but it’s imperative they do so in a safe and respectful manner. That’s what these reminders are all about.”

During the campaign, Bridgewater Marina will post daily safe boating tips and infographics on its Facebook page. Topics include tips on essential equipment to have on board, the dangers of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the importance of using weather forecasts to make safe boating decisions, and how to choose a properly fitting life jacket.

According to statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard, drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2019.

The National Safe Boating Council reports 86 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

“New life jackets are much more comfortable, lightweight and stylish than the bulky orange style most boaters are familiar with,” Waters said. “There are also innovative options, such as inflatable life jackets that allow mobility and flexibility for activities like boating, fishing, and paddling that are much cooler in the warmer weather.”
