UPDATE 12:39 p.m.: Bedford town officials say that the broken transmission pole has been removed along Route 122 following the vehicle crash that caused an outage around Big Island Wednesday.

UPDATE 10:49 a.m.: The Town of Bedford says crews from Bedford Electric are currently working to replace a broken utility pole along Route 122 that has resulted in an outage around the Big Island area.

According to town officials, the outage was caused by a vehicle crash, leaving the transmission pole broken in multiple places.

Power is expected to be restored to the Big Island area by the end of the day on Wednesday.

Because of Bedford’s current phone issues, you are asked to report your outage via email — if possible — to outages@bedfordva.gov.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing customers in that area & we appreciate your patience while crews work to get the power restored,” the Town of Bedford wrote on Facebook.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Bedford County school officials say that Big Island Elementary School is closing for the day Wednesday morning because the school is currently without power.

Bedford County Public Schools says the power is expected to be out for four to five hours at Big Island Elementary. In addition, the school does not have water, phones, or electricity in order to prepare the planned lunch menu.

As a result, school officials say students will be dismissed at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25. Regular bus routes will be running, but you can also pick up your kid(s) from the school.

If you need to arrange for alternate transportation or have trouble making such arrangements, you are asked to email Principal Andy Bliss at abliss@bedford.k12.va.us.
