UPDATE 4:47 p.m.: Bedford County officials have confirmed that the man facing charges for sex-related crimes against children served as a volunteer coach with the county’s Parks and Recreation department.
We confirm that Andrew Donahue, the man arrested Friday by the Bedford Police Department for child sex charges, was a volunteer coach with Bedford County Parks and Recreation.
The Director of Bedford County Parks and Recreation sent a certified letter to Donahue today to notify him of his termination from the coaching position. The Bedford County Department of Parks and Recreation follows National Recreation and Park Association guidelines for credentialing volunteers. Volunteers who have pending cases for sex offenses, felonies, and certain misdemeanors are ineligible to coach. If a volunteer is found guilty of any sex offense, they are ineligible to coach for Bedford County for their lifetime.
All volunteer coaches with Bedford County Parks and Recreation must undergo a criminal background check. Returning coaches are subject to rescreening randomly or a minimum of every other year. Donahue’s most recent multi-state, criminal background check revealed no concerns when received on Aug. 5, 2022.
According to the Bedford Police Department, there is no indication at this time that the alleged incidents took place during any county-sponsored events. BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR) — A Bedford man is currently behind bars as he faces multiple charges involving sex-related offenses against children, according to police.
According to the Bedford Police Department, the Criminal Investigations Division investigated a report of a sexual assault on Friday, Aug. 26.
Then, on Monday, Aug. 29, authorities announced that detectives charged 30-year-old Andrew Donahue with two counts of indecent liberties with a child, as well as two counts of forcible sodomy.
Officials say Donahue is currently being held without bond at the Amherst County Adult Detention Center.
