BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — With some help from a drone, Bedford County crews managed to rescue two hikers who got lost on Sharp Top Mountain over the weekend.

According to a Facebook post from the Bedford Fire Department on Saturday, Dec. 25, units were dispatched at approximately 6 p.m. to Sharp Top Mountain to find the lost hikers.

First responders reportedly established a command post on the bus trail leading to the summit.

The department says a drone with a thermal camera was deployed, which managed to quickly locate the hikers below Buzzards Roost.

According to fire officials, rescuers on the ground followed the drone and tracked town two male hikers, who had set off on the trails before dusk without proper lighting or emergency equipment.

With no reports of injuries, crews returned to service at 8:30 p.m., the department says.
