UPDATE 8:56 a.m. (12/2/21): Virginia State Police’s Senior Alert for the 77-year-old man who went missing in Bedford County was canceled Thursday morning after the man was found safe and sound.
UPDATE 2:22 p.m.: As Bedford County authorities continue to search for Bernard Thomas — who went missing in Forest late Tuesday afternoon — Virginia State Police has announced a Senior Alert for the 77-year-old man.
“Mr. Thomas suffers from a cognitive impairment and his disappearance poses a credible threat to his health and safety, as determined by the investigating agency,” Virginia State Police said.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the community’s help to find a 77-year-old man who went missing from the Forest area Tuesday evening.
According to the sheriff’s office, Bernard Thomas is 5’8″ tall, weighs 181 pounds, has brown eyes and gray hair, and lives in Lynchburg.
Authorities say Thomas was last seen leaving the Thomas Jefferson Road area of Bedford County around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30 in a green 1998 Toyota Avalon with Virginia tag VND-4275.
Thomas was reportedly wearing the purple and black sweater seen in the photograph above, as well as gray pants, a ball cap, and a brown corduroy jacket with white wool around the neck and interior of the jacket.
The sheriff’s office says Thomas does not usually drive at night. In addition, he is on medication for dementia, cholesterol, and blood pressure, but he has not taken these meds since Monday, Nov. 29.
According to officials, Thomas is also a former pilot and may visit airports to check out the planes.
