Athletes compete in return of Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Liberty University will be the host of the 2021 Virginia Commonwealth Games. Athletes will compete in seven different sports over the next week.

“We’re proud to host athletes from around the state at the 2021 Virginia Commonwealth Games at Liberty University, where they can showcase their God-given talents in our state-of-the-art facilities that allow them to perform at their best,” said President Jerry Prevo of Liberty University. “The Liberty family will be cheering them on as they strive to set personal goals and reach the podium in their chosen competitions.”

Below is the schedule of games happening this week:

  • July 13: Snowflex (Ski/Snowboard) at Liberty University
  • July 15-18: Racquetball at Liberty University
  • July 16-18: All Star Baseball at Liberty University
  • July 16-18: Pickleball at Liberty University
  • July 17-18: Adult Slow Pitch Softball at Peaksview Park, Lynchburg
  • July 17-18: All Star Softball at Liberty University
  • July 17: Adult Rugby at Peaksview Park, Lynchburg

“The Commonwealth Games bring thousands of athletes to the City and we are thrilled as both the number of participants and the impact that they have in Lynchburg continues to grow,” said Lynchburg Mayor Mary Jane Dolan. “While we know that travel and event participation looks different this year, we want you to feel confident while you are here. A healthy and safe travel experience is a shared responsibility with our citizens, eateries, lodging and visitors – we are all in this together!”

To celebrate the return of the 2021 Virginia Commonwealth Games, there will be a tailgate party and opening ceremonies in the LU Indoor Football Practice Facility and surrounding fields. Athletes get complimentary food with their Games wristband and extra goodies.

It takes place on Friday, July 23 from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. Opening ceremonies will be in Williams Stadium and start at 8 p.m. A fireworks show is set for 8:30 p.m. Events are free for the public and open to the community.

These games will lead up to the Main Games Weekend from July 23- 25.
