NELLYSFORD, Va. (WFXR) — On March 29th, the Wintergreen Fire and Rescue Department responded to what they initially believed to be a “barn” fire in Nellysford.

Firefighters arrived in Horizons Village in Nelson County on Wednesday evening to find a two-story art studio engulfed in flames. After the fire was extinguished, crews determined the studio to be a total loss.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

Firefighters share that they have worked with Horizons Village for years and the community is considered to be “fire-wise” due to their efforts at preparing for wildfires. The community has taken precautionary measures such as improving roads, clearing brush, adding signs, and staging water vaults, to decrease wildfire risks.

Although the studio was lost, fortunately, there were no injuries. We have worked closely with them over the years to obtain “Firewise Community” status; Horizons is an example of a community taking wildfire seriously.”

Virginia Department of Forestry says the site and surrounding area have been bulldozed to stop the fire from rekindling and spreading.
