Amherst Elementary to close early as more than 1,000 Appalachian Power customers without power in county

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — With more than 1,000 Appalachian Power customers in Amherst County dealing with outages Monday morning, Amherst Elementary School decided to close early for the day.

Amherst County Public Schools says Amherst Elementary School will close at noon on Monday, March 8 because of a recent power outage.

School officials say they will keep families in the loop with regard to any changes.

Meanwhile, as of 11:44 a.m. on Monday, Appalachian Power says 1,051 customers are without power in Amherst County due to three outage cases. However, 1,049 of those customer outages are from a single case that started at 9:18 a.m., according to the company.

Appalachian Power did not list a cause for this massive outage, but estimates crews will restore power by 2:30 p.m. on Monday
