AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Amherst County Public Schools (ACPS) recognized three of their employees for their leadership and dedication to the school district.
Ruth Matheny was selected as ACPS’ 2021 Teacher of the Year, while Blair Payne and Robert Jones were named ACPS’ Support Staff of the Year.
Matheny is a Reading Specialist at Elon Elementary School and has been an educator with ACPS since 2012.
“Mrs. Matheny’s student-centered approach and ability to foster a literacy-friendly school community contribute to her success as an educator,” wrote Leila Saunders, Assistant Principal of Elon Elementary.
Payne is the School Nurse at Amherst Middle School, who has also supported the ACPS’ COVID Response Team during the 2020-2021 school year. She is recognized for developing relationships with her school community and her diligence in supporting protocols to provide a safe and secure learning environment.
Jones works in the Department of Maintenance. He has served ACPS for 41 years and is recognized for his exceptional dedication to assisting with daily building maintenance operations. School officials say Jones is known for his extraordinary work ethic and his willingness to assist when others are in need.

staff, these three individuals really embodied our mission of Every Child, Every Day.”
Matheny, Payne, and Jones will be recognized for their achievements on Thursday, May 13
at the ACPS’ regular school board meeting.
